CITY (NewsDakota.com) – The third time was the charm Wednesday night in a doubleheader between Valley City State and Mayville State.
The Viking women and Comet men both picked up victories Wednesday after twice losing to their opponents earlier this season.
The Viking women knocked off No. 15 Mayville State 85-79, while the Comet men stunned No. 20 Valley City State 56-55 on a 3-pointer from Steve Ivory Jr. with about 2 seconds remaining.
Valley City State called timeout and got a 30-foot look for Sekani Milligen at the buzzer but it was off the mark. VCSU made just 11 of 24 free throws on the night, and were 1-for-4 in the final minute, allowing Mayville State the chance to win. The Viking men drop to 20-7 after their first home loss of the season. Mayville is now 9-17.
In the women’s game, both teams shot over 50 percent as they combined for 164 points.The Viking women were just a bit better, making 56 percent of their shots. Alyssa Hummel led VCSU with 24 point and Brittany Lehner scored 19. The Vikings trailed 78-77 in the final minutes, but Hummel and Lehner scored the next six points for the decisive run.
VCSU trailed by as many as 14 in the first half after Mayville made 9 for their first 11 3-point attempts. Viking coach Jill DeVries was proud of the way her team hung tough.
The Viking women improve to 21-6. Mayville falls to 20-3. It is the second win over a Top 15 team for VCSU in the last three games.
Up next: Valley City State hosts Dakota State for a 2 and 4 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. It is the regular season finale for the Vikings.
