Arla K. Fitzner, age 95, of Valley City, ND died on Tuesday Feb. 12, 2013 at the Sheyenne Care Center surrendering to her long, cruel battle with Alzheimers. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 PM Saturday Feb. 16th at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City with Rev. Emmy Isaackson and Rev. Randy Schecht officiating. Visitation will be from 5 PM until 7 PM Friday at the Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery near Valley City in the spring. Arla was born on March 5, 1917, near Grand Marais, MN, the daughter of Theodore and Olga (Lundquist) Anderson. She moved with her family to Granite Falls, MN where she graduated from high school.
Arla remained in Granite Falls employed by the Granite Falls school district where on October 1, 1939, she married attorney Romen H. Fitzner. In 1945 the family moved to Valley City, ND where Arla was a full time homemaker until the death of her husband on June 16, 1973. Thereafter she was employed for a time by McCurley Chevrolet-Buick.
Arla was active in the ministry of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir for over 60 years and volunteered her time and talent to church office staff. She was an accomplished bridge player and golfer and was proud of her club championships.
She is survived by her four sons, R. Jon Fitzner, Rick (Jo) Fitzner, Mark (Cindy) Fitzner, all of Valley City and Kurt Fitzner of Lisbon, ND, nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and her sister, Carolyn (Donald) Frederickson of Granite Falls, MN. Arla was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, RoAnn Welk, and five siblings.
