(NewsDakota.com) The South Border Mustangs are sending 13 kids to the state tournament as they won their third consecutive Class B Region 1 title on Saturday in Napoleon. The Mustangs had five champions and scored a total of 244 points.
The Oakes Tornadoes has a good day scoring 182.5 points and finishing second. They had three champions; Erik Loepp at 113, Caden Coleman at 132, and Michael Kelly at 285. Others placing and advancing to the state tournament for Oakes are Austin Kelly (2nd) at 138, Trent Ptacek (3rd) at 152, Cole Ehrlin (2nd) 170, Jed Bopp (2nd) 182, and Tristian Schmitz (4th) at 195.
South Border is the defending duel state champions and Oakes is the defending individual state champions.
The Ellendale-Edgeley/Kum Thunder advanced two wrestlers to state: Weston Ellingson (4th) at 113 and Dylan Schnabel (2nd) at 195. LaMoure advanced four to state: Brent Hebl (2nd) at 120, Caleb Dorich (3rd) at 126, Dalton Hamlin (3rd) at 145, and Logan Schockman (2nd) 220.
Final team scores were South Border 244, Oakes 182.5, Lisbon 181, Linton 150, Napoleon 144.5, LaMoure 82, Kindred 73, EEK 46.
The State Tournament starts Thursday morning at 10:00 am with the individual matches. Immediately after that the dual tournament will take place. South Border will wrestle Stanley and Linton will wrestle Hettinger. Coverage on KDDR 1220 AM/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com starts at 9:30 a.m.
