(NewsDakota.com)- Home-court advantage may have played a part, but both the Jimmie men and women came away with wins in the Dakota Tip-off Classic Championship games. The women defeated Mayville St 79-61 and the men stormed past Valley City St. 69-66.

Each team made five threes in the first-half as the Jimmies staked a 39-36 lead into the break over Mayville St. The Jimmies outscored the Comets 40-25 in the second stanza after starting the half on a 15-1 run including six more triples to win 79-61.

Carly Jensen finished the tournament with nine makes from beyond the arc including five in the title game, she had 15. Marcisa McMillan was a late scratch from the Comet starting lineup, but she came off the bench for 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Bridget Schuneman took advantage of the time McMillan spent on the bench to score 16 points. Amber Ramlo added 12.

The men faced-off against the VCSU Vikings for the first time in the men’s championship game and it turned into another hard fought battle. Mark Hoge’s 22 points in the second-half paced the Jimmies to a 69-66 victory.

Sekani Milligan and Gus Kueber jump started the Vikings in the first half as they raced to a 37-30 halftime advantage. Hoge spent 10 minutes on the bench after picking up his second four midway through the half and only had four points before halftime.

Davon Thomas picked up the slack with 12 points in the first, he finished with 18 (four threes). Jared Sutherland and Taylor Newton both hit big three pointers to help the Jimmies late in the game. It was Breshion Tucker’s layup with 10 seconds to go that sealed it.

Jamestown College is back to action on Thursday when they host Mayville State. The women will tip off at 5:30 and the men at 7:30. Games will be broadcast on 1400 KQDJ.

In the first game of the day Sunday, the Valley City State women bounced back from a Saturday loss by pulling away from Dakota State in the second half. Leading 33-30 at halftime, the Vikings led by as many as 24 in the second half of a 71-52 win over the Trojans. Brittany Lehner led the Vikings with 17 points and Courtney Titus added 14.
Valley City State is off for a few days before taking a road trip Thursday to Dakota State. The VCSU women (17-4) tip at 5:30 Thursday, and the men (15-5) tip at 7:30. Pregame coverage will begin about 5:15 p.m. on KOVC 1490 and NewsDakota.com.
