(NewsDakota.com)- The first day of the 2013 Stutsman County Basketball Tournament was played at the Jamestown Civic Center today.
#3 Napoleon 61, Edgeley-Kulm-Montpeiler 34
The tournament’s top-seed, Napoleon found themselves trailing late in the first quarter before they took control. The Imperials used a 27-2 run in the early part of quarter two to put away the Rebels.
Mariah Jangula, the lone underclassmen in the Imperial starting line-up, had a game-high 15 points. Coach Darcy Lehr was able to go to his bench the entire fourth quarter with a 25-point lead.
Carrington (JV) 48, Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal 40
Jacey Engelhorn started a 10-0 run in the first quarter with her first of four three-pointers to help the Cardinals take early control. Carrington built a 19-point lead with 4:50 to go in the second. The Rebels refused to go away, cutting the lead to one in the second half.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Audra Montgomery and Brooke Rosenau gave the Cardinals a sufficient lead to close out the victory. Carrington will now play the third-ranked imperials on Friday at 6pm.
Ellendale 55, Central Prairie 32
The No. 2 seed Cardinals dominated both halves, shooting 44 percent from the field in the process on their way to victory. Madilyn Bommersbach was a scoring force for Ellendale with 21 points, including four 3-pointers.
Central Prairie struggled from the field, shooting just 29 percent and turning the ball over 23 times throughout the game. In a losing effort, Jaycee Moldenhauer led the Lady Firebirds with 11 points.
Midkota 60, South Border 29
An impressive double-double from Emily Berge led the Mustangs past South Border in this 3 vs. 6 matchup. Berge finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocks.
Madison Schnabel had a quiet first half, but finished the game with 16 points and 9 rebounds in the defeat. South Border was held to just 26.8 percent shooting from the field and struggled from the free throw line as well, going just 7 of 16.
Midkota and Ellendale will square off in the second championship ladder semifinals game slated for approximately 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
