N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota Army National Guard unit has been notified that it might be called for duty in Afghanistan.
The Guard says the Jamestown-based 817th Engineer Company has been put on alert. If the unit is called to duty, about 100 soldiers would head overseas in the spring of 2014.
The unit specializes in combat engineering and has previously served in Iraq. Soldiers in the unit are from 34 communities across North Dakota, eight in Minnesota and one in Texas.
Separately, the North Dakota Air National Guard says it has no airmen deployed overseas for the first time in about 11 years. Leaders expect the hiatus to be brief.
