CITY (NewsDakota.com) – A big first half led the Valley City State women’s basketball team to a road victory Monday night.

The Viking women outscored South Dakota School of Mines 37-24 in the first half en route to a 59-47 victory over the Hardrockers in Rapid City, S.D.

As usual, it was a balanced attack for VCSU in the victory. Courtney Titus led the Vikings with 12 points; Katelyn Ralston had 11 points and eight rebounds; Brittany Lehner scored nine and pulled down 10 boards, and Kelsey Hunter scored eight points.

The Vikings improve to 13-2 with the win over Mines, a program that has been transitioning to NCAA Division II.

In the men’s game Monday night, a short-handed Vikings team fell to the Hardrockers by a score of 88-72. It was an exhibition game for VCSU, and does not count against their record.

VCSU was playing without Sekani Milligen and Gus Kueber, the team’s two leading scorers. John Raquel scored 23 points in the loss and Aaron Duske added 16 points.

Up next: The VCSU women (13-2) and men (12-4) host Northern New Mexico at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Friday night and then host Northern New Mexico at 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
