Memorial service for Ernest Veland, 87, of Ellendale will be 11:00 am, Friday, January 4, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale. The Rev. Tom Eckstein will officiate.
Ernest died December 27, 2012 at Aberdeen Health and Rehab.
Ernest Wilson Blackburn Veland was born to Robert Lee and Matilda (Mueller) Blackburn on January 2, 1925 in Jacksonville, FL. His father died when he was five months old. His mother moved back to North Dakota to be with her family. He grew up on the family farm in the Forbes, ND area where he was raised by his mother and step-father Nels Veland. Ernest started farming in the rural Forbes area in the 1940’s. In 1944, he bought a farm which he farmed until his retirement in 1990.
He was united in marriage to Marie “Mary” Steinwand on July 14, 1945 in Aberdeen. Ernest was baptized and confirmed on March 31, 1946 in Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale. They moved to Weslaco, Texas in 1960 where they managed a hotel which was owned by his step-father. They moved back to North Dakota to their farm in 1965 and farmed until 1990. Mary died November 10, 2008.
Ernest held various offices in Albion Township and also in Christ Lutheran Church and Zion Lutheran Church. He was a member of Weslaco Texas Lions Club, former member of Board of Directors of the Weslaco Chamber of Commerce, Weslaco Elks and has been a member of the Herman Schlinker American Legion Post #137 of Ellendale since 1987.
Ernest loved gardening and sharing his fresh vegetables with the nursing home residents, farming, hunting and he always used what he hunted. To the game wardens, “Ernest did get away with it”. He also liked to fish and spend time with his grandchildren and family.
Ernest is survived by his son, Lee Roy Veland of Weslaco, TX; sister, Adeline (Fred) Karjalainen of Aberdeen; daughter-in-law, Joyce Veland of Powell, WY; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, wife, one son, Rev. Larry A. Veland, one granddaughter, Leah Veland, one infant grandson, Lee Roy Veland, three brothers and four half sisters.
Honorary Urnbearers will be Alex Steinwand, Fred Karjalainen, Warren Snyder, Cliff Dobie, Pete Flynn Sr., Pastor Khrone and all of Ernest’s friends.
The organist will be Marilyn Burow and the soloist is Tim Steinwand.
The family would like to give a special “Thank You” to Aberdeen Health and Rehabs nurses and staff.
Carlsen Funeral Home of Ellendale has been entrusted with arrangements.
