(NewsDakota.com) The Ellendale High School girls and boys basketball team were wanting some payback against their Dickey County rival after being swept in Oakes last year. The Cardinals were able to exact revenge with a sweep of the Tornadoes, and took back the Cowbell in the process.
Girls: Ellendale 54 Oakes 46
Ellendale made three three-pointers in the first eight minutes of the contest, and took a 17-8 lead after one quarter. The Cardinals mantained the edge at halftime, up 24-15 thanks to discipline with the number of teams fouls committed, and the number of low turnovers.
The third quarter saw a Tornado awakening; lead by Nicole Warren who scored 11 points, and finished the game with a team high 21. However, the fourth quarter saw turnovers and fouls rack up; and Madilyn Bommersbach was solid with back-to-back threes to finish with a team high 19 points to help Ellendale win for the first time against Oakes since 2009.
Ellendale has won two in a row, and now stands at 2-1 for the season, while Oakes still searches for a victory with a record of 0-3.
Boys: Ellendale 54 Oakes 51
The two teams traded shots for the first half of the game, separrated by just two points at the ends of the first and second quarters. In the third, Ellendale had a 16 point lead, but Oakes slowly crawled their way back.
Oakes certainly had a chance in the waining minutes to tie or take the lead; but missed opportunities on free throws including making only two out of six after Ellendale picked up a flagrant foul, and on the next play went over the limit and had a technical foul administered
Sophomores lead the way for both teams in scoring; Ellendale’s Adam White had 27 and Oakes’ Bryce Meehl finished with 28. Ellendale improved to 3-3, while Oakes falls to 0-5.
Next up for both Oakes and Ellendale is the Dakota Holiday tourney which is scheduled to be held at the Ellendale High School Gym next Friday and Saturday. Ellendale will face Edgeley/Kulm in the opening round.
KDDR 1220 AM/95.9 FM and NewsDakota.com will have coverage of Oakes games throughout the tournament. The Tornadoes face Leola-Fredrick South Dakota in the opening round on Friday; the girls play at 3:30 p.m., with the boys to follow.
