Yvonne Veronica Mary “Vonnie” Pegg (Hartl), 59 passed away early Wednesday morning at Mercy Hospital in Valley City, North Dakota. Memorial Services will be conducted at 2 PM Saturday at the Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home in Valley City. The family will be at the funeral home one hour prior to services to greet friends. A time of fellowship and remembrance will be held at 3:00 PM at the Valley City VFW Club.
Vonnie, born 14 September 1953 in Fessenden, North Dakota, was the oldest daughter of Duffy and Angela Hartl of Harvey, North Dakota. After attending Fessenden High School in 1971, which she graduated salutatorian, Vonnie attended the North Dakota State College of Science graduating in 1972 with an associate’s degree in accounting. While working for Farmer’s Union Travel Club in Jamestown, North Dakota, Vonnie met her husband, Eugene “John” Pegg whom she married on 31 July 1977 in Valley City. In 2012, John and Vonnie celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. For over fifteen years, Vonnie worked for the Barnes County Auditor’s Office.
Throughout Vonnie’s life she faced many medical hardships that would have crippled a lesser individual. She suffered from type 1 diabetes since childhood. In 1979 faced with kidney failure, Vonnie received a transplant from her sister Patricia. Even with the new kidney, doctors only expected Vonnie to live at the most five years. However, she had other plans, and with the help of new medical breakthroughs, she prevailed. In 1982, Vonnie gave birth to her only son, Charles, and thus, became the first diabetic, kidney transplant recipient to ever have a child, a feat her doctors said she also would not survive. Yet again, she proved her doctors wrong. In 1996, Vonnie, again faced hardship when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Refusing to give up, Vonnie chose to fight and yet again, she prevailed. In connection with her diabetes, Vonnie later in life began suffering from congestive heart failure. It was from this combination that Vonnie finally succumbed to on the 12 of December 2012.
Vonnie is survived by her son, husband, brother, four sisters, four sisters-in-law, their families, and fourteen nieces and nephews as well as her many friends and of course her two beloved dachshunds, Harley and Holley.
