Catherine (Kay) Dawkins, age 101 of Valley City died Dec 5th at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Tuesday Dec. 11th at Epworth United Methodist Church in Valley City with Rev. Dayne Zachrison officiating. Visitation will be from 4 PM until 7 PM Monday at the Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home in Valley City. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Born January 24, 1911, Kay lived on the family farm near Oakes, ND. She attended a one-room school south of Oakes and was a 1929 graduate of Oakes High School. During and following high school Kay worked for the North American Creamery in Oakes until her marriage to Kenneth A. Dawkins on January 30, 1937.
Ken and Kay moved to Valley City, ND. Ken started a refrigeration business. Kay worked at the local creamery, was a partner in the Dairy Queen and did bookwork for the refrigeration business. Kay was an active member of the Epworth United Methodist Church.
Following retirement Ken and Kay went to Florida for the winters. They pulled their camper for eight years after which they purchased a permanent trailer home that served them well for 20 years. They made many friends in Florida and continued to enjoy the exchange of cards, letters, e-mails, and phone calls after they were unable to travel. Kay moved to the Sheyenne Care Center in November of 2009 where she continued to enjoy reading, knitting, crocheting, and helping the center staff by unrolling garbage bags. Kay inspired many and was blessed with a long and wonderful life.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Rosa Frank and her sister Anna Arneson. She is survived by her husband Kenneth; two children Donald of Minneapolis, MN and Betty (Jim) McConnell of Yamhill, OR; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
