N.D. (NewsDakota.com, AP) – The effects of a snowy, icy and overall wintry weather weekend in North Dakota are still being felt in many parts of the state.

The National Weather Service in Bismarck says some areas of northwest North Dakota got up to 18 inches of snow over the weekend, mostly in the north and western parts of the state. Locally, the majority of Stutsman County received anywhere from 1 to 3 inches, but northwest parts of Kidder County saw anywhere from 4 to 6 inches.

While no major additional snowfall beyond some light dustings are being forecast over the next few days and while most travel advisories have been lifted, the North Dakota Department of Transportation is encouraging motorists to use extreme caution on the roadways. Current conditions for roads and highways in and around Jamestown indicate normal travel speeds but do caution regarding snow drifts as well as possible icy conditions.

Stutsman County Sheriff Chad Kaiser says everyone still needs to be cognizant of those conditions, as not all roadways are the same. “Even though it says 75 (mph), it doesn’t mean you have to go 75,” he says. “You have to be aware of the conditions. For instance, I was out near Kensal yesterday and the combination of blowing snow and ice made for pretty slick roads out there.”

Kaiser says the Sheriff’s Office received 12 calls to respond to accidents beginning Friday afternoon and lasting into this morning. He says the majority of them were likely due to weather conditions.
