CITY (NewsDakota.com) – Sekani Milligen scored 20 points, but it was a total team effort Saturday afternoon as the Valley City State men’s basketball team improved to 3-1.

Aaron Duske added 15 points and Gus Kueber scored 13 in the Vikings 74-61 defeat of Viterbo University (Wis.) at the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.

The Vikings started slow, falling behind 14-4 midway through the first half, but rallied to take a halftime lead 24-22. Head coach Jeff Kaminsky credited the team’s defense for keying the offense, creating transition baskets such as one created by Patrick Rogers and Duske late in the first half.

Kueber’s basket just before the halftime buzzer gave the Vikings a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

VCSU opened up a 33-24 lead early in the second half, and never trailed by less than four, before pulling away late. VCSU shot 53 percent for the game, including 62 percent in the second half.

The Vikings played the game without a true point guard. All three point guards on the roster missed the game due to injury. Chris Embden stepped up and handled the ball, along with a host of other Vikings.

Kaminsky said he hopes point guard AJ McDonald, the team’s leading scorer so far this season, will be able to return from a banged-up knee in time for the Vikings next game Saturday, Nov. 17 against Dickinson State.

That game can be heard on Dakota Country Radio. The women tip at 2 p.m. followed by the men at 4 p.m.
