N.D. (AP) North Dakota’s number of voters set a new high in Tuesday’s election, but the state’s turnout percentage was well short of a record.

Secretary of State Al Jaeger says 324,597 people voted in the election. That’s about 400 more than the previous record number of voters in 1984.

But Jaeger says the voter turnout was only about 61 percent. Since 1980, North Dakota has had nine elections in which the voter turnout percentage was higher. The most popular election was in 1984, when there was 69 percent turnout.

North Dakota doesn’t have voter registration, so the turnout is figured according to estimates of the number of people of voting age living in the state. Census estimates say there were about 533,000 people who were eligible to vote in Tuesday’s election.
