GRAND FORKS (NewsDakota.com)- A Dakota Bowl record 287 yards rushing from Hazen’s Briar Borneman lead the Bison to a 55-28 rout of Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn in the first of four title tilts from the Alerus Center.
The Cinderella run for the Sioux hit midnight early in this one. Having come from behind to win all three playoff match ups prior to today’s Dakota Bowl, WNG fell behind 29-0 early.
Stetson Carr had three first half scoring runs to send Hazen into the locker room up 29-8. Borneman had the other.
WNG wouldn’t go quietly, they pulled the score to 29-16 on the opening drive of the second half.
The dagger came on the ensuing possession, a fourth and goal conversation for Hazen. Carr after being pressured heaved the ball to the right corner of the end zone where Connor Doll made an acrobatic catch to make it 35-16. The Sioux never recovered.
Carr finished 7-9, 166 yards and a touchdown. Borneman’s Dakota Bowl record stands at 287 yards and he picked up four scores.
It is the second title for Hazen in school title.
