FORKS (NewsDakota.com) – For most of the first set Tuesday night, it looked like the Valley City Hi-Liners could pull off a big upset in the first round of the EDC Volleyball Tournament.
Things were clicking for the No. 7 Hi-Liners as they first built a 15-12 and then 17-14 lead over No. 2 seed Grand Forks Red River.
But then the Riders found their groove behind senior hitter Hadley Steffen. The senior led Red River to 11 of the next 13 points as the Riders rallied to win set one 25-19 and then swept the Hi-Liners, 25-19, 25-16, 25-7.
Valley City played some pretty good volleyball in sets one and two but Red River’s attack was just too good at times with Steffen and senior Cassidy Bush racking up kills.
Valley City was led by a good night from junior Dierra Diegel, who tallied six kills.
The Hi-Liners drop into the consolation semifinals of the EDC Tournament and will take on Wahpeton on Friday, about 3:30 p.m. at Fargo Davies High School. Wahpeton was swept by Fargo North in the opening round Tuesday.
Coverage of Friday’s match will be on KOVC 1490. The winner of that match will play in a state qualifying match on Saturday.
