ND (NewsDakota.com)- Ellendale was lone team from District 5 to survive the first day of the Region III girls volleyball tournament. Napoleon, Linton-HMB, and South Border also punched their tickets to tonight’s semi-finals.
Napoleon, District 6 top-seed, moved on with relative ease, downing Edgeley-Kulm in straight sets. The Imperials jumped out to 25-9 wins in both of the first two sets before holding on 25-19 for the sweep.
The tournament hosts, LaMoure probably got the toughest draw having to face Linton-HMB. The Lions went into the District 6 tournament as the top-seed before being upended by South Border.
LaMoure jumped on the Lions early taking 25-15 wins in sets one and two. Linton refused to go quietly as they rallied back to force a decisive fifth set. Looking into the huddles after the fourth set, anyone in the gym would have been surprised to see the confident Lions lose the fifth.
Linton-HMB picked up a 15-11 win in the final set to oust the home team. Nicole Nieuwsma had a match-high 23 kills.
Ellendale and South Border were both able to come away with four set wins on the bottom half of the bracket. Ellendale dropped a back and forth opening set to Strasburg-Zeeland, 30-28, before rolling past the Clippers.
South Border steamrolled PBK in the opener, but the Rebels battled back to force a fourth set. In that fourth set, the Mustangs finally were able to put some distance between themselves and PBK.
Napoleon and Linton-HMB will start the action tonight from LaMoure at 6:00pm and then South Border and Ellendale to follow. Both matches will be carried on TED-FM 98.3/102.7.
