CITY (NewsDakota.com) – A big night by Jessica Denholm helped key a Hi-Liner sweep Tuesday night in EDC volleyball action.
Denholm tallied seven kills, 28 assists and six aces as she helped the Hi-Liners to a sweep of Fargo South, 27-25, 25-21, 25-16 during a match at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.
Valley City head coach Katy Van Dyke credited great serving as a key to the victory, including a couple big serving runs by Denholm in set three and Tonya Van Dyke in set two.
Denholm’s seven-point run in set three included four service aces and broke a 14-14 tie en route to a 21-14 Hi-Liner lead. Valley City’s attack was keyed by a balanced attack. Madison Taylor led the team with 10 kills in the victory. Jasmine Stevens tallied nine kills, Dierra Diegel had eight, Denholm had seven and Van Dyke scored six kills.
The sweep was worth two points in the EDC standings and improves Valley City’s EDC record to 6-8. The Hi-Liners move into the No. 6 spot in the EDC rankings with two matches remaining in the regular season. Valley City hosts Grand Forks Red River on Thursday night and hosts Fargo North on Tuesday, Oct. 30 to wrap up the regular season.
Tuesday’s big victory guarantees that at worst, Valley City will host a home play-in match to get into the EDC Tournament. But, with a win in one of their final two matches or some help from other teams, Valley City could remain in the No. 6 spot and avoid a play-in match altogether.
Fargo South drops to 3-12 in EDC play.
