(NewsDakota.com) Griggs Barnes County traveled up to Grafton for a meeting of AA East teams on Friday night (Sept. 28). The Grafton Spoilers are the defending AA Champs from last year defeating Fargo Shanley, and went a perfect 12-0 last season. The Titans knew it was going to be a tough battle, but with Wyatt Steckler back from injury, Head Coach Davey Zinkey’s plan of attack would be to pound the ball with Steckler and try and wear down the defense of the Spoilers. But Grafton was ready and came out with the victory, 32-6. GBC Titans fall to 0-6, Grafton improves to 5-1 (so far Grafton’s only loss this year is to Fargo Shanley).
The Titans drew first blood with 8:58 remaining in the first quarter. On third down, Coach Zinkey called timeout, and on the next play, Sophomore QB Timmy Erker threw it to WR Brad Clemens for a 40-yard touchdown pass making it 6-0 Titans. But thats all the Titans would get, as it would be all Spoilers after that. They would score three times in the first quarter in less than a minute. At the 4:32 mark, Grafton’s SR QB Christian Lunde took it up the middle for a 25 yard touchdown run. Then the ensuing kickoff, Head Coach Tom Maus of Grafton went for an onside kick, the Titans weren’t prepared and Grafton recovered. Then Coach Maus went to the air attack, Lunde threw to Austin Conteras for a 40 yard TD pass at the 4:20 mark, then 32 seconds later, after a turnover by the Titans, The Spoilers scored again with Lunde connecting with Trevor McMartin for a 35 yard TD pass.
In the second quarter with 7:33 left, Lunde connected with McMartin again, this time from 32 yards out, making it 26-6 at the half.
The only score in the second half, was a 20 yard TD run by Mathew Mendoza making it 32-6 the final.
Next up for the Titans is Kindred at Cooperstown this Friday, Oct. 5th. That game can be heard on FM 103.1 The Raven starting at 6:30p.
