(NewsDakota.com)–Five touchdowns on five possessions by the Hi-Liner starting offense led to a 40-0 rout of the Kindred Vikings by Valley City Friday night at Jerlow Field in Kindred.
Shane Undem rushed for 126 yards and three touchdowns, including a 31-yard touchdown run in the second half for the only scoring after the break. Brandon Breckheimer added 88 yards, and Anthony Olstad scored twice in the win, moving Valley City to 3-1 overall, 2-1 in Region I (eastern division) play.
A stiff northwest wind set up the Hi-Liners’ first score, as they took over on Kindred’s 25 yard line following an 11-yard punt by the Vikings. Undem capped a six-play march with 7:43 left of the opening quarter.
A Viking fumble on the first snap of their next drive again gave Valley City the ball at Kindred’s 25. Seven plays later, Olstad found the endzone from a yard away. Following an 11-play drive from the Vikings that stalled, the Hi-Liners marched 80 yards in nine plays. Undem again finished the drive with a seven-yard run, and the Hi-Liners led 24-0 with 9:04 left of the half.
Valley City held Kindred in five plays, and took over on their own 23. Breckheimer ripped off 30 yards to open the possession, but after another first down, the drive faltered, forcing the Hi-Liners into a fourth-and-14 at Kindred’s 35. Quarterback Austin Svenningson was asked to throw, the only time he would do so, and found Kyle Knutson to continue the drive.
Three plays later, Olstad found paydirt for the second time, and the Hi-Liners took a 32-0 lead to the break. Undem then added a 31-yard dash to the house on the first, and only, possession byt he starters of the second half to cap the scoring.
The Hi-Liners host their homecoming game next Friday, facing Lisbon in the annual Sandbag Bowl, playing the Broncos for the Volunteer Trophy, at Hanna Field.
