N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s candidates for the U.S. House are at odds about tax breaks for the wind energy industry.

Democrat Pam Gulleson says a tax credit that benefits wind-generated electricity should be extended. It’s scheduled to expire at the end of the year.

Republican Kevin Cramer says he doesn’t support extending the tax break. He says tough decisions are needed to cut federal spending and the nation’s $16 trillion debt.

Cramer and Gulleson had the first debate of their campaign Wednesday in Bismarck. It was sponsored by the North Dakota Broadcasters Association.

North Dakota’s wind energy industry is expanding. The state can generate almost 1,500 megawatts of wind power.

Gulleson says the tax credit is important to the industry, but Cramer says it should be able to get by without subsidies.
