N.D. (AP) – Residents of North Dakota’s capital city will vote in November on a proposed million expansion of the Bismarck Civic Center.
The City Commission on Tuesday approved ballot language. Residents will be asked to approve a 1.5 percent motel, liquor and restaurant tax and a 1 percent lodging tax to help fund an expansion aimed at increasing the Civic Center’s convention business.
The downtown facility has a large arena that can host about 10,000 people for events ranging from sports to concerts. It also has a separate exhibit hall.
Local Chamber of Commerce President Kelvin Hullet says that Billings, Mont., and the South Dakota cities of Sioux Falls and Rapid City all are building or proposing multimillion-dollar arena expansions, and Bismarck needs to compete.
