CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The dedication to the nearly million Valley City Water Treatment plant was held last week. One of the benefits of the upgrade is the ability to treat higher sulfate levels if Devils Lake has an uncontrolled flow into the Sheyenne River.

City Administrator David Schelkoph says the cost of treating higher sulfates levels isn’t known yet and can only be estimated in the first year of operation.

He says citizens need to know the new equipment can treat sulfates at any level.

Before the Devils Lake east end outlet was running, untreated sulfate levels in Valley City were about 290 parts per million. Today untreated sulfate levels are around 310 to 375 parts-per-million according to water treatment plant supervisor Wade Hesch.
