N.D. (AP) – A witness testifying in the case of a Jamestown man accused of killing a Somali immigrant says the man allegedly tried to dispose the body in his well.

Thirty-four-year-old Leron Howard is charged with murder and criminal conspiracy in the death of 18-year-old Abdi Ali Ahmed. His body was found in a ditch near Spiritwood on April 30, 2011. Authorities say he was beaten and stabbed.

Delmonte Jones, who lives a few hundred yards from where Ahmed’s body was found, testified Thursday that Howard and 22-year-old co-defendant Janelle Cave came to his home early in the morning of April 30, 2011. Jones says the two asked about Jones’ well, saying they had a body to dispose of.

A jury in February convicted Cave on manslaughter and criminal conspiracy charges. She is serving an 11-year sentence, but is appealing her conviction.

Howard faces up to life in prison if convicted of murder. Howard’s attorney Steve Mottinger said during opening statements Wednesday that his client had a role in Ahmed’s death, but did not mean to kill him. He will ask the jury to find Howard guilty of a lesser count of manslaughter.
