(NewsDakota.com) – Confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in North Dakota are making a small surge.

About one week after the first human case of 2012 was reported in a Dickey County man, the North Dakota Department of Health says it has now confirmed 14 human cases of West Nile. Five people have needed to be hospitalized.

Dickey County has four confirmed human cases. Stutsman, Barnes and LaMoure counties are among those with one confirmed human case of West Nile Virus. The last major outbreak of West Nile came in 2007, when 369 human cases were reported in the state.

Last year, the state only had four confirmed human cases of West Nile.

Michelle Feist with the North Dakota Department of Health says West Nile has been quiet in North Dakota in recent years.

Eight cases of West Nile in horses have been reported this summer.
