(NewsDakota.com) Day one of the 2012 State Class B Babe Ruth Tournament had plenty of action.
Carrington fell to Kindred 4-2 in the first game, while Oakes was able to defeat Hatton 5-1 in game three. Carrington (25-19) took a 2-0 lead after the second inning on two unearned runs, and Kindred answered in the third with two runs of their own. Kindred (20-5) then got to Carrington starting pitcher Patrick Freeman in the sixth with five hits and two runs to seal the deal.
As for Oakes, Bryce Meehl was not only the winning pitcher, but also hit an inside-the-park home run in the fifth inning to give Oakes a 23-0 record. Hatton (17-6) had their only run in the sixth. Meehl struck out five and allowed an unearned run and three hits.
In other action, Grafton pummeled Beulah 13-0 in five innings, and Casselton and Velva were rained out in the bottom of the first inning. Resumption of play will be at 9 a.m., moving the day two schedule back.
Carrington plays Beulah around 11 a.m. and Oakes will play the Casselton/Velva winner around 6:30. KDAK-AM 1600 will have Carrington coverage, and KDDR-AM 1220 will have Oakes coverage.
