CITY (NewsDakota.com)–A former Hi-Liner golf standout will return home to join Valley City State’s golf program.
Shane Ost (So., Valley City, ND) signed a letter of intent to join the Viking golf team Tuesday morning at a signing ceremony at the Valley City Town and Country Club. He will transfer to VCSU from the University of North Dakota, where he attended classes during his freshman year this past academic year.
Ost was a five-year letterwinner on the Hi-Liner golf team, as well as a football and basketball standout at Valley City. During his golf career, he won the 2010 Class “B” Region I medalist honors at Dakota Winds Golf Course in Hankinson, and received all-state status while helping the Hi-Liners capture the Class “B” state title at Crossroads Golf Course in Carrington.
Ost was then part of a Hi-Liner team that was fifth in a stacked Eastern Dakota Conference race in 2011, and also fifth at the Class “A” meet, both meets occuring at Kings Walk in Grand Forks.

Along with his high school career, Ost was invited to play on the Minnesota Junior PGA tour for two years, and scored high enough to be invited to the Players Tour. He also finished inside the top 64 at the historic Pine to Palm match-play event in Detroit Lakes.
The signing of Ost was the first for new co-head Viking golf coaches Rick Ross and Jamie Paurus. Ross said, “This is an exciting day. We’ve had our eye on (Ost) for a while now.”
Ost will join fellow former Hi-Liner Ben Sorenson on the Viking golf team. Sorenson graduated from VCHS this past spring, and will begin his freshman year at VCSU this fall.
