N.D. (AP) – North Dakota political leaders are pushing Congress for passage of a farm bill before the fall deadline. Experts say it’s not likely to happen.

Former North Dakota governor and U.S. agriculture secretary Ed Schafer says Congress has rarely met deadlines for farm legislation, let alone in an election year. He expects a temporary extension.

North Dakota State University researcher Dwight Aakre says the House Agriculture Committee’s approval this week surprised him, but he believes that meeting a September deadline is a “big hurdle.”

The bill has passed the Senate. It might not reach the full House.

Aakre says he doesn’t believe claims by political candidates that farmers need to know what’s in the bill in order to plan for next year.

Says Aakre, “Nothing really changes for producers.”
