Long distance and 9-1-1 services in Stutsman County and portions of Barnes County were restored at approximately 4:43 p.m.. All Stutsman County 9-1-1 calls are once again being answered in Jamestown.
The long distance outage began at approximately 12:55 p.m. due to an apparent fiber optic cable cut west of Valley City. The damage cable prevented long distance calls to be made from land line telephones. Since 9-1-1 is a long distance service, 9-1-1 services were severely hampered as a result. 9-1-1 calls from cell phones were immediately re-routed to State Radio in Bismarck. Dakota Central and CenturyLink customers were provided local phone numbers to call in case of an emergency. Shortly after that, 9-1-1 calls from Dakota Central customers were routed to State Radio and 9-1-1 calls from CenturyLink customers were routed to the 252-1000 non-emergency lines here in Jamestown.
Today’s long distance outage is the second outage in the last 10 days. The first outage occurred on June 14 with somewhat similar consequences in the ability to provide 9-1-1 services to Stutsman County residents. That outage lasted approximately 7 hours before services were restored.
