(NewsDakota.com) – A Jamestown woman convicted of manslaughter in February intends to appeal her conviction.

Janelle Cave’s attorney David Ogren filed a notice of appeal Tuesday in Southeast District Court. It is the start of the process to have the case reviewed by the North Dakota Supreme Court.

Cave was convicted of manslaughter and criminal conspiracy in February connected to the death of 18-year-old Abdi Ali Ahmed, whose body was found near Spiritwood in April, 2011. He had been stabbed and suffered blunt force trauma to the head.

Cave was sentenced to 11 years in prison for criminal conspiracy and eight years for manslaughter. The sentences will run concurrently.

Cave maintained throughout her trial that she was scared of co-defendant Leron Lee Howard and was a bystander to Ahmed’s death. A jury found her not guilty of murder.

The grounds for her appeal will come later in the appeal process.

Howard is scheduled to go on trial in August. He is charged with murder and criminal conspiracy and faces up to life in prison.
