CITY (NewsDakota.com) Two river bank repair and a stabilization project along the Sheyenne River on Main in Valley City will start this year.

The river bank restoration project hopes to save the Elks building from continued threats of erosion along the Sheyenne River.

The Barnes County Watershed District working with the Soil Conservation agency will place rocks, timbers and other material to prevent further river bank erosion near the Elks building along the Sheyenne River. B-C-W-D spokeswoman Lori Frank says the stabilization project will cost about $170,000.

Valley City Mayor Bob Werkhoven says the city’s share is about $14,000. The 350 foot stream bank restoration will start near the city park bridge and run back toward 2nd street southwest. The Valley City commission unanimously approved the project during a special meeting on Monday.

Last week slightly more than $500-thousand dollars was approved by the state for construction upgrades to protect Valley City infrastructure damaged by river bank erosion.

The project will construct a wall to hold sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems in place near the city park walk bridge and to repair a river bank collapse along Main Street. Valley City officials hope all three projects will be completed later this year.
