CITY  (NewsDakota.com)–Both Hi-Liner track and field teams had strong showings at the Central Cass Invitational Thursday, with the Hi-Liner girls finishing second with 137 points, and the boys third with 101 points.

The girls had their strong team showing with only two championships, and both titles were group efforts.  Valley City won the 1600-meter relay (4:21.62) and the 3200-meter relay (11:39.81).

The power, and the drama, came in the second-place finishes.  After trailing teammate Molly Willson in the 100-meter dash all season, Jenna Jacob won the duel Thursday, finishing second (12.47), five-hundredths-of-a-second faster than Willson (12.52), who was third.  Jacob added a second in the 400-meter dash.

April Berntson was second in the 1600-meter run and third in the 400-meter dash.  Natalie Ley was second in the 3200-meter run, Bekah Peterson was second in the triple jump and third in the long jump, while Abby Brown was second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.  Valley City was also second in the 400-meter relay. 

Tonya Van Dyke was fourth in the shotput, Becca Mundfrom was fifth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump, and Peterson added an eighth in the 100-meter dash.

On the boys side, there were two champions.  Casey Engelhard won the 800-meter run (2:14.14), and Paul Viland took the pole vault (12′ 9″).  Kyle Knutson was second in the discus throw (116′ 7″), and Engelhard added a second in the 400-meter dash (57.5).

Carson Sorby was third in the shot put, and the Hi-Liners were third in the 800-meter relay.  Colin Naeseth was fourth in the 100-meter dash, Dereck Durheim was fourth in the 200-meter dash and the long jump, Nick Lee was fourth in the 1600-meter run.

Christian Kvilvang was fifth in the triple jump, and the Hi-Liners were fifth in the 400-meter relay.  Dustin Lindgren was seventh in the long jump, and Sorby added an eighth in the discus throw.
