being out hit on the day, the Valley City State University Softball team came away with a sweep of the UM-Crookston Golden Eagles on their home field.
In game one, each team collected only five hits but the Golden Eagles pitchers walked four and the defense committed two errors and the Vikings took advantage to post a 7-3 victory. Katie McBride scattered five UM-Crookston hits and induced 14 ground balls to secure the Viking home win.
In game two, UM-Crookston hung four on the Vikings in the top of the first, but the Vikings plated six of their own as a response in the bottom of the same inning to take away any momentum from the visitors. Valley City State score one more in the bottom of the second on an Emma Nelson solo home run and neither team would score for the remainder of the 7-4 Viking victory.
UM-Crookston tagged VCSU starter Jen Shadlock for twelve hits, but Shadlock settled in after the first inning and worked twelve ground balls to keep the Golden Eagles at bay.
With the sweep, the Vikings move their win streak to five in a row as they have now won nine of their last ten games to improve their overall record to 23-18.
Valley City State hosts another NCAA Division II opponent, Bemidji State University, on Wednesday at 3:00 and 5:00 pm. The Vikings will honor the 2012 senior class between games.
