Kohler, Sr., 83, Valley City, ND, died Sunday, April 22, 2012, at the Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City. Ken was born April 30, 1928, rural Oriska, ND, the son of Joseph and Mae (Schwehr) Kohler.
He attended country school in rural Cuba, ND and in 1936, moved with his family to Oriska. His family again moved to a farm-site in 1941, near Tower City, ND. Kenneth completed is education and helped on the family farm.
On November 21, 1949, he married Norma Jeanne Dunham in Oriska. They lived in the Tower City community from 1949-1966. Kenneth and Jeannie moved to the Fingal, ND area in 1966. Ken farmed with his four sons.
In 1982, they became residents of the city of Fingal, where he was a very active member in the community. He was mayor there for 12 years. Ken served on the Fingal School Board as well as the First National Bank of Hawley, MN and First National Bank of Valley City, ND. He was also a board member of the Open Door Center in Valley City for many years.
He was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and the Eagles Club, both in Valley City.
Kenneth enjoyed being with his brothers and sisters, especially his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Norma Jeanne of Valley City; daughter, Patricia (Monte) Johnson; sons, Kenneth (Susan) Kohler, John (Jennifer) Kohler, Michael (Debbie) Kohler, and Todd (Kristi) Kohler, all of Valley City; 13 grandchildren, Heather (Brent) Kukla, Joshua (Lissa) Johnson, Digger (Tennille) Johnson, Katie (Chris) Duffy, Tara (Adam) Svenningsen, Brooke (Brian) Gubrud, Jon Lahr, Ashley Lahr, Jed (Katie) Kohler, Brittany Kohler, Derek Kohler, Karli Kohler, Kara Kohler; 11 great grandchildren, Max Kukla, Will Kukla, Jack Kukla, Bryce Johnson, Trevor Johnson, Kale Johnson, Bergan Johnson, Logan Duffy, Jack Duffy, Kyle Duffy, Lexi Svenningsen; 4 brothers, Lyle (Ione) Kohler of Winslow, AZ, Richard (Diane) Kohler of Valley City, Robert Kohler of Moorhead, MN, and Ronald (Linda) Kohler of Tower City; 3 sisters, Marlys (Norbert) Kosir of Fargo, ND, Betty (Rick) McClaflin of Tower City, and Mary (Curt) Richman of Lake Park, MN; and a sister-in-law, Mary Pat Kohler of Bismarck, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Cody Lahr; brothers, Harold Kohler and Lornie Kohler; and sisters, JoAnne Kohler and Eileen Kohler.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Kenneth will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 27, 2012 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Valley City, with Msr. Dennis Skonseng as celebrant. Burial will be St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Oriska.
Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at St. Catherine’s. A prayer service will be held there beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Friday
