“Dan” Smith, age 73, of Valley City, ND, died Saturday, April 21st at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City. He lived a rich and happy life, loved by family and friends.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, April 25th at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Valley City with Monsignor Dennis Skonseng celebrant. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Lerud Schuldt Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday morning. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Catherine’s Catholic Cemetery, Valley City, ND.
Dan was born in Dickinson, ND on April 10th, 1939 to Daniel, Sr. and Nadine (O’Leary) Smith. He grew up in Valley City, ND and received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND in 1964. He entered the United States Navy in 1965 and served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Coral Sea during the Vietnam War. Upon his return in the early 1970s, Dan began a long and successful career in architecture and eventually started his own firm, Dan Smith Architect, in Valley City. He met the love of his life, Joan Hunt, at the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation Maryvale Convent in Valley City, ND in 1981. They were married on December 21st, 1985 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Valley City, where they were active members. They remained in Valley City until Dan’s death after 27 years of marriage.
Dan is survived by his wife Joan, four children – Bill (Sarah) of Irvine, CA, Karen (Rich) and Erik (Susan) of Valley City, ND, and Jason of Chicago, IL – and four grandchildren – Rachel, Eliza, Hale and Kai. He was preceded by his parents.
