N.D. (AP) – A state crime agent says a pair of black coveralls and tan boots led investigators to discover the severed head of a North Dakota State University researcher in the basement of Daniel Wacht’s home.
The 31-year-old Wacht is accused of shooting and decapitating Kurt Johnson, who was last seen alive getting into Wacht’s van outside a bar in Cooperstown on New Year’s Eve 2010. Wacht has pleaded not guilty.
Johnson’s severed head was found in a crawl space in Wacht’s basement. His body has not been found.
Investigator Shelby Franklin testified Friday that he noticed dirt on the coveralls and boots, which seemed odd because of all the snow on the ground.
The Forum newspaper reports that Franklin dug through the crawl space with a stick and coffee can.
