CITY (NewsDakota.com) Valley City’s request for monetary assistance was denied by the Barnes County board of commissioners concerning the upcoming reconstruction project of 9th avenue northwest.

The request was for $125,000. Mayor Bob Werkhoven explains the rational behind the city’s request.

Barnes County officials said funding is tight and their hands are full trying to repair several county gravel roads damaged by the floods of 2009 and 2011. The County commission unanimously denied the city request during their regular meeting on Tuesday.

Construction on the $4.6 million dollars project is on hold due to a congressional delay in the passage of the federal highway bill. Bid letting on the project is set for mid June.
80 percent of the road and bike path portion of the project would be federally funded with the remaining share through state and local dollars.

The city water and sanitary sewer reconstruction portion would be a 100 percent local obligation.
