(NewsDakota.com) – The Stutsman County Fire Emergency Declaration and Burn Ban Proclamation remain in effect following Tuesday morning’s county commission meeting.

Stutsman County Emergency Manager Jerry Bergquist says despite recent rain, there is “still a lot of dead grass and very little growth of new grass.”

He says a poll of area fire chiefs found that most would prefer the ban currently remain in place. Bergquist says only two grass fires have been reported since the commission’s meeting on April 3. The burn ban has been in place since March 20.

The burn ban prohibits open burning when the Fire Danger Index is in the “very high” or “extreme” category, or a Red Flag Warning has been issued for the county. Since the April 3 commission meeting, burning has been forbidden on six days due to the Fire Danger Index. A daily update of the Fire Danger Index can be found here.
