CITY, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Valley City will enter into a formal agreement to study ways to reduce the risk of future flooding in the North Dakota city.

Valley City Mayor Bob Werkhoven and Col. Michael Price, commander of the corps’ St. Paul District, will sign a cost-sharing agreement for the study on April 10. The city and the corps will each pay half the expenses for the study, which is expected to cost $1.5 million and take more than two years to complete.

Emergency efforts were required to combat flooding along the Sheyenne River in 2009 and 2011.

The corps reports that the study will evaluate alternatives for reducing flood damages and managing risks to public safety from flooding.
