(NewsDakota.com) – City officials say they do not know when roads in downtown Jamestown will be completely open following a Feb. 17 fire.

The southbound lane of First Avenue North in the 300 block has been closed since the fire that destroyed a building owned by Vining Oil and damaged the old Elks building. Also closed is a block of Second Street Southwest near the old Elks Building.

The concern centers around a possible collapse of the buildings, especially the tall Elks building.

City engineer Reed Schwartzkopf told the Jamestown Public Works Committee Thursday that he is being denied access to the structural engineer’s report on the Elks building. Until they know they structural integrity of the building, the city cannot safely reopen the roads.

Schwartzkopf says the two insurance companies involved are being uncooperative.
