CITY, IA  (NewsDakota.com)–The Jimmie women draw a lot of headlines with an offense that is third in the nation, scoring over 74 points per game.

Their defense is also pretty good.

With the Jimmies struggling for about 30 minutes of the game, their defense put the clamps on Union, KY, limiting the Bulldogs to just 13 field goals in a 60-42 win in the first round of the NAIA Division II national tournament in Sioux City, IA.

Jamestown College held Union to 28% shooting, and killed the Bulldogs on the glass, outrebounding Union 53-33, including 19-3 on the offensive side.

Kayla Roemmich (Jr., Bottineau, ND) then shored up a faltering offense, scoring 12 points off the bench to lead the Jimmies, including five key points in a stretch that gave Jamestown College the spark they were looking for, opening up a 16-point lead that proved to be too much for a foul-ridden Bulldog team to overcome.

Lindsey Waters (Jr., Stearns, KY), an All-American post for Union averaging 21.2 points, played less than 16 minutes after playing 39 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) tournament finale against Tennessee Wesleyan, fouling out with just four points.

After trailing briefly to start the game, the Jimmies led by six to eight points throughout most of the first half, but missed opportunities to open up decisive leads until Carly Jensen (So., White Bear Lake, MN) connected for her second three with 3:28 left of the half, giving the Jimmies a 28-16 lead.  They led 30-21 at the break.

Union cut the lead behind reserve post Brooke Hill (Jr., Sparta, KY), who was called upon to spell the foul-troubled waters.  Her eight second-half points helped to cut the Jimmie lead to six at 36-30 halfway through the second half.

The Jimmies responded with a 15-5 run that put the game way, keyed by Roemmich.  Her bucket-and-foul with 5:15 to go took the lead to 13 for the first time at 47-34.  Another drive to the basket by Roemmich, followed by a layin by Morgan Mathison (So., Moorhead, MN) ran the lead to 51-35 with 4:16 to play.

The lead would grow to 19 on a late basket by Bridget Schuneman (Jr., Lino Lakes, MN), and the Jimmies would settle for the 18-point victory and a second-round date Friday morning.  Schuneman finished with 11 points.  Hill led the Bulldogs with 12.

Jamestown College will face either Northwestern, IA or Indiana-Southeast Friday morning.  The Jimmies own a 64-62 win over the Red Raiders on November 5th in Jamestown, and defeated the Grenadiers in their last national tournament appearance in 2010.

Gametime Friday will be at 8:30 a.m.  Pregame coverage will begin at 8:10 a.m. on KQDJ-AM 1400.
