CITY  (NewsDakota.com)–Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal earned the lone win for District 5 in the opening round of the Region III girls basketball tournament in Napoleon Monday.

The Rebels took a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter, then watched as Kidder County pulled within two down the stretch and scored at the buzzer, cutting the final margin to 54-53 in the tournament’s opening game.

Five Rebels scored between nine and 14 points, with Amanda Beckley scoring 10 of her 14 after halftime.  Kelly Carlson added seven of her 11 in the fourth quarter.  Morgan Rohrich and Sadie Rohrich scored 35 of the Pirates 53 points, with Morgan scoring 13 of her game-high 19 in the fourth.

The Rebels will face Napoleon, who dominated Barnes County North 70-37 in the second game of the day.  The Imperials imposed their will early, leading 31-9 early in the second quarter.

Sheridan Dewald led all scorers with 17, with all of her damage done in the first three quarters.  Mariah Jangula scored 15 through three, and Kendra Weigel scored 13 for the Imperials, also through three quarters.  Calby Hanson led the Bison with nine.  Sydney Reimers added eight.

Not to be outdone by the Imperials, fellow District 6 team Linton-HMB took down LaMoure 56-27 in game three.  Linton did not have the flash of Napoleon offensively, but their defense helped the Lions build a 30-6 lead at halftime.

Kalyn Schneider led the scoring with 13 points, with McKenna Flyberg adding 12.  LaMoure was led by six each from Mackenzie Bickford and Abby Warcken.

South Border won a physical battle with Ellendale 62-51 to cap the night and send a third District 6 team to the semifinals.  Ellendale led at the half 29-28, but was held to just three field goals in the second and third quarters combined, and fell to a hard-charging Mustangs team.

Karly Wald led the scoring with 21 points for the Mustangs, with Kalli Scherbenske knocking down 20 more.  Shayna Mertz scored 15 for the Cardinals, with Brianna Vance chipping in 10.

Tuesday night’s semifinals begin with PBK facing Napoleon, followed by Linton taking on South Border.  The games begin at 6:00 p.m.  Sunny 98.3 FM will have pregame coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m.
