(NewsDakota.com) – North Dakota tax commissioner Cory Fong and attorney general Wayne Stenehjem are cautioning consumers about a recent email scan that claims to be official IRS correspondence.
In a press release issued Wednesday, Fong says the scam email claims that the recipient’s “Income Tax Refund Appeal” has been rejected and the taxpayer must resubmit the appeal by clicking on a link in the email.
Fong advises people to be cautious about providing personal information by email. He says the tax department or IRS do not use email to request confidential information.
Stenehjem says there are numerous versions of phony IRS emails, and all are scams.
Anyone who gets a suspicious email that claims to be from the IRS or Tax Department can call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040, the ND Tax Department at 1-877-328-7088 or the Attorney General’s office at 1-800-472-2600.
