(NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown City Council unanimously appointed Sergeant Scott Edinger to Jamestown Police Chief during a special meeting Thursday afternoon.
Edinger was one of five finalists for the position, which opened when former chief David Donegan retired on Dec. 31. Council members cited Edinger’s vision for the future of the department, as well as his support by department employees as reason for their choice.
Edinger is an 18-year veteran of the Jamestown Police Department, moving here from Wyoming in 1994. Prior to that he served as a deputy for the Niobrara County Sheriff’s Department in Wyoming.
Edinger, who was unable to attend the meeting because he was at training, is a Special Operations Team Commander for the Jamestown Police Department, and a hazardous materials technician.
Edinger’s appointment to police chief takes place immediately, said Mayor Katie Andersen. Lieutenant John Gletne has served as Interim Police Chief since Jan. 3.
A total of 16 people applied for the position. Among the five finalists were four in-house applicants and Lieutenant Joel Scharf with the Moorhead Police Department. Scharf recently withdrew his name from consideration, said Andersen.
