N.D.- The Mayor of Oakes is expecting 2012 to be another great year for the city that he governs.
Monty Zimmer says that there were some hurdles in 2011, including the devastating severe storm that brought a ton of wind to town on July 10 with over 300 trees that went down, and the replacement of North Dakota Highway 1. However, Irrigation Days was a bright spot for the community.
Going into this year, Zimmer wants to remind businesses along Main Avenue to continue to use sand, and not salt to combat ice. Zimmer says this should be the last winter that sand is needed, and once summer comes, a sealant will be placed on the road to protect it from salt. If you’re in need of salt, call City Hall and they will arraign for you to receive sand free of charge.
In addition, there have been some setback when it comes to building permits, and the city is working on improving that process. The council has approved Nathan O’Brien as a supervisor to the building permit process.
Patios, fences, new houses, and garages need permits from the city before building can start, and Zimmer suggest those who are planning on building such items in the spring start the application process for a permit as soon as possible.
