N.D. – There use to be four roads to get in and out of Sanborn; but due to high water that number is reduced to just two.

Barnes County Assistant State’s Attorney Brad Cruff said the situation has created anxiety for fire and rescue crews worried about the day an ambulance or fire truck will wait too long responding to an emergency.

A rail crossing south of Sanborn is causing frustration for motorists who wait 10 to 45 minutes for the train to clear the crossing.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokeswoman Amy McBeth said the problem is a nearby siding where one train has to wait for another before moving forward.

Cruff said if the issue is not resolved soon the county will pursue every legal option available to get it resolved.

McBeth said safety at the siding is a major concern. She says BNSF is working to fix the waiting time at the crossing with better dispatch communication.

Cruff said Sanborn residents have been dealing with this rail crossing issue for more than 5 years and their patience has been exhausted.
