CITY (NewsDakota.com)–After defeating the two host teams of the Wesmen Classic, the Viking men saved their best for last.
Valley City State dominated a Brandon University Bobcats team that had dominated two opponents on their way to the finals, scoring a 90-58 win Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Vikings earned the first Wesmen Classic tournament title for a non-Canadian team since 1968, when Bismarck State College won the second playing of the tournament.
Sekani Milligan led all scorers with 25 points, pacing three Vikings in double figures. Aaron Duske scored 18, including 8-8 from the line. He hit is final 12 free throws of the tournament, which included four in overtime Thursday night that put Winnipeg on ice in the semis.
A.J. McDonald, finding himself open in key situations late in the shot clock, hit three treys for a 12-point night.
Milligan was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, and he and Duske were named tournament all-stars.
The Vikings are now 13-4, and have won 11 of their last 12 games. They are back in action Wednesday night at the University of Minnesota-Morris.
