– Train whistles in downtown will be a thing of the past Wednesday as Jamestown’s quiet zone ordinance kicks in.
City Engineer Reed Schwartzkopf says the quiet zone ordinance takes effect Wednesday, and is the culmination of a several-year effort from start to finish. It prohibits trains from blowing their whistles at most intersections in Jamestown’s city limits.
Schwartzkopf says people will notice the difference, relating how many people near the tracks cannot even talk on the phone when a whistle blows.
He also says there are some people who are sorry to see the train whistles go, saying they grew up with the whistles and to them they are just part of the town.
The quiet zone project cost a little more than a half-million dollars, the bulk of which was spent to upgrade crossings.
