City – The former police chief of Valley City and a fire fighter from Valley City will be on the ballot for the upcoming mayoral and city commissioner recall on January 24.

Valley City auditor Avis Richter told newsdakota.com on Friday that Dean Ross and Duane (Dewey) Magnuson got the necessary signatures to run in the recall election. She and her staff validated the signatures on November 25.

Dean Ross said, “My love for the town leads me to run for mayor. I feel like I have a lot of positive things to offer.”

Ross said the top concern from people he has spoken with is the possibility of a release of water from Devils Lake. He said that will be one of his top priorities if elected.

Ross was a member of the Valley City Police Department for 38 years, and it’s chief for 12 years.

Mayor Bob Werkhoven said Devils Lake is everyone’s top priority now and he added that he and other city officials worked hard to keep Valley City dry during the 2011 flood. He said, we’ll let the people decide on January 24.

Meanwhile, Valley City fire fighter Duane (Dewey) Magnuson will run against commissioner Ken Evenson in the January 24 recall.

Evenson defended his record as a city commissioner by saying he has voted in the best interest of the people of Valley City while he’s been on the city commission.”

Magnuson said, “he decided to run for the office to help the city heal from its summer long controversy involving former police chief Dean Ross and former city administrator Jon Cameron.”

Magnuson, said, “he wants the people of Valley City to have a voice in city hall that won’t shut them down. The recall election will be held Tuesday, January 24.
